Medical cannabis patients often expect different effects from products with different cannabinoid contents and ratios (active ingredient in cannabis such as THC and CBD). However, you may not realize that the format of the product also affects its impact.

firebird-cbdoil currently offers a variety of product formats, including dried flowers, steam concentrate, oil with syringe, mouth spray and capsule. These products are designed to be inhaled or swallowed.

Which cannabis products are intended to be inhaled?

Dried cannabis flower is available in two formats: whole flower or pre-ground. Whole flower products must be ground into a fine powder before use. Alternatively, the pre-ground flower is ready to use. All dried flower products must be activated by applying heat and are consumed by smoking or vaping. Because dried flower vaporizers provide less heat to cannabis, these devices can help limit the amount of burned product 2 inhaled. For this reason, Canadian guidelines on lower-risk cannabis use suggest vaping dried cannabis as an alternative to smoking.

Vape Concentrates are highly concentrated cannabis extracts and offer an alternative, convenient and discreet method of consuming THC and CBD. Our vape concentrates are pre-activated and available in different flavors, including: lemon, lemon eucalyptus and flower cannabis flavor

Oil with syringe gives patients full control over the dosage of their medication. This means that this is a good option for those who are dosing in low or high amounts, or for those who are slowly and gradually increasing their dosing until a value is found that maximizes the therapeutic effects and minimizes potential undesirable side effects. The syringe also makes it convenient to apply the oil under the tongue.

Oral sprays enable the patient's medication to be transported easily and enable convenient and discreet use on the go. They allow patients to take their medication in low, regular doses, a practice called "microdosing".

Capsules provide a consistent, pre-measured amount of oil for those who know their effective dose. They enable easier and more discreet transportation and the consumption of cannabis oil. Finally, the capsules are tasteless and odorless, since the oil is enclosed in the gel capsule.

The Difference Between Inhaling and Taking Cannabis

A product that is inhaled through smoking or vaping has different effects than an ingested product format. 1. Patients may find these differences beneficial depending on the type of symptoms being treated or the desired duration of the effects. Before using a new product, it is always important to speak to your doctor first so that an appropriate treatment plan can be drawn up.

DID YOU KNOW? CBD-dominant products still contain small amounts of THC. This means that people who work in job-safe positions may still test positive for THC during random drug screening and should speak to their employer before consuming cannabis 9.

Inhaling cannabis leads to quick and short effects

When patients inhale smoked or vaporized cannabis, the effects can be felt quickly and it takes seconds to minutes for them to feel the first effects. This is because cannabinoids (like THC and CBD) are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream via the lungs. There the cannabinoids can move through the body to produce different effects1.

The rapid effects of inhaled cannabis are beneficial for patients who want to treat symptoms that appear suddenly, such as nausea and vomiting 3 or breakthrough pain.

Taking cannabis delays and long-term effects

The effects of taking cannabis by mouth, e.g. B. taking cannabis oil products are much slower and it may take up to 4 hours for the full effect to be felt. 1. The effects are slower because swallowed cannabis oil has to be ingested through the food. The digestive tract, as soon as THC and other cannabinoids are absorbed, are metabolized by the liver and finally enter the bloodstream 1.

Cannabis oils can be put under the tongue (sublingual) to try to reduce the time it takes to feel effects. This method is not perfect, and in all likelihood part of the dose will be swallowed and absorbed by the digestive tract 5,6. Regardless of how one uses oils, the available literature suggests that the absorption of THC and CBD during oral administration (i.e. swallowed or under the tongue) is comparable 5,7,8.

Regardless of whether you take cannabis oils under your tongue or swallow them, the effects usually last much longer than with inhaled cannabis (up to 12 hours) 1. For this reason, formats such as cannabis oils are potentially long-lasting better for the treatment of chronic diseases (symptoms that develop and persist over time) such as chronic pain and arthritis3.

DID YOU KNOW? You can improve the absorption of cannabis oil by taking it on a full stomach.

How do I find the right cannabis format?

The format of your medical cannabis product can have different effects and serve your medical needs in different ways. When a patient needs quick relief, inhaling cannabis results in faster onset, while taking cannabis products can have longer lasting effects in chronic conditions. It is important to remember that the therapeutic effects of cannabis are highly individualized, which means that what works for one person can have different effects for another.

For example, patients with respiratory diseases who want to treat acute symptoms by inhaling cannabis should first speak to their doctor and weigh the advantages and disadvantages of this method, since inhaling cannabis can negatively affect lung function 9.

In addition, for various reasons, certain individuals may not want to inhale smoke or vapor from cannabis, including health concerns or scars associated with the smell of cannabis. In these cases, cannabis oils are a good option because you can dose more discreetly while avoiding concerns about inhaling by-products when you heat cannabis.

Vaporization of dried cannabis produces less toxic by-products (although it is not completely removed by this process) 2. Inhaling cannabis may still be considered, but may not be and should be for everyone be assessed on a case by case basis. We have prepared an article on the best ways to choose medical cannabis products.

Talk to your doctor to find out which method of cannabis use is best for you.
